Bakeneko
Programs Used: Clip Studio Paint and Unity
This is a prototype of a top-down shooter called, "Bakeneko". The
controls are WASD to move around and point and shoot with the mouse. I
did the level design and artwork and the production and programing was
done by
Robert Veloya
In this game, you are a friendly cat yokai, known as the Bakeneko. Your
elderly owner has left the house to go on a nice, long stroll in the
forest. After a while of waiting (and many gulps of lamp oil), the house
has become infested with rats! It's up to you to use your newly aqcuired
fire-breathing powers to get rid of the rats before your owner gets
back!
When making the art for this game, I was inspired by Gameboy color
games, such as Legend of Zelda: Oracle of Ages and Pokemon Crystal. It
was also a good opportunity to learn pixel art and develop a workflow
for it in Clip Studio. With the pixel art style, I intended to make the
game whimsical to the younger audience yet nostalgic to the older
audience who have played Gameboy Color games. Lastly, I carefully choose
the color palette because I wanted a mix of warm and cool colors. I
often refer to this palette as the "sunrise/sunset palette" because it
represents the end of the Bakeneko's old life and the beginning of a new
one.
